Minister to Organize Le 600m Controversial Conference

The Minister of Sports, Ahmed Khanou, has insisted that the planned National Sports Development Conference will go ahead on the 17th and 18 May, 2017. It is on record that the Minister of Sports has spent thirteen months to plan a conference that is merely targeting fifty participants. The sum of six hundred million Leones has been approved by the Ministry of Finance to organize the Sports Development Conference.

What is most disturbing is the dogged insistence of the Minister of Sports that the conference will look into the formation of a National Sports Commission, which was the idea of the former Minister of Sports, Paul Kamara, who terminated the process following several advices from Cabinet Ministers and members of the National Sports Council.

The Minister of Sports has also maintained that the National Sports Policy, which was approved by the Cabinet of Sierra Leone in 2015, must be reviewed to incorporate his own ideas. However, the staff of the Ministry of Sports and National Sports Council are deeply divided over the tyrannical and inconsistencies of the Minister of Sports. The Minister of Sports has also insisted on a Code of Conduct for Sports in Sierra Leone. The Ahmed Khanou Code of Conduct will seriously contravene the IOC, FIFA and other international Sports Federation policies.

The proposed National Sports Development Conference was, however, planned to look into the problems and divisions affecting the progress of sports, to look at resource mobilization and sponsorship of sports, to look into infrastructural, technical, administrative development and the development of athletics. . Apparently, these initiatives and initial plan of the Sports Conference have been diverted to things that have been addressed by the National Sports Council. The members of staff of the Ministry of Sports have questioned the capacity and seriousness of the current Minister in promoting the President’s Agenda for Prosperity and young peoples’ aspirations.

Furthermore, the members of staff of the Sports Council and sports administrator are calling on the Minister of Sports to summon a meeting for the National Sports Council before holding the Conference.
