Plan International Commits Support To Girls Rights In Sierra Leone

Plan International Sierra Leone’s Country Director Mr. Casely Ato Coleman on March 8th 2017 reaffirmed Plan’s commitment to supporting programs that would enhance the empowerment of girls, women and gender parity in Sierra Leone during the 2017 International Women’s Day celebration at the Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma’s mini stadium in Newton- Western Rural districts.

Mr. Coleman said Plan’s purpose is to strive for a just world that advances children’s rights and equality  of girls and highlighted Plan’s work and support to the ministry of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs in the past few years. He indicated that Plan had supported the Ministry by constructing a building a fully furbished conference room, one 50 KVA generator for the supply of electricity to the entire Ministry, a borehole with 2 HP submissive pumps, 12,000 litres storage tank, constructed a 100ft/30m road, provided toilet facilities and general facelift of the entire 5 blocks of the Ministry to a total of about one billion, three hundred million Leones (Le 1,300,000,000). He also mentioned the child protection systems strengthening project in Moyamba which Plan and the Ministry partnered to implement and said there  is agreement with the Ministry to scale up across the country. He said Plan’s interventions in child protection, education, health, Livelihoods and WASH have enhanced capacity of communities and children in addressing challenges and risk that children especially girls face across the country. These programmes have registered huge successes in promoting girls rights and empowerment for women.

Mr. Coleman said  the localised theme for this year’s celebration ‘Sustaining the Increase and Inclusive Participation of women to enhance Socio Economic Gender Parity by 2030’ is perfectly aligned with Plan International Sierra Leone’s next five year strategic choices which focuses mainly on girls rights and youth programming.

Mr. Coleman assured the President and people of Sierra Leone that Plan will continue to develop and implement programmes that would support increased investment in girls education and inclusive participation of women and girls for enhanced socio-economic Gender Parity in Sierra Leone.

The ceremony was attended by His Excellency the President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, the First Lady of the Republic of Sierra Leone, the Honourable Vice President and wife of the Republic of Sierra Leone, government Ministers, Parliamentarians, representatives from various local councils, religious, cultural and traditional leaders, various sector groups, senior government functionaries, children from various schools, development partners, journalists and community members.
