Journalists for Human Rights on Thursday 8th October 2009 held a press briefing at Santano House, Howe Street, Freetown to educate members of the media about the importance of  business reporting.

Stephen Douglas Jnr., the facilitator in Sierra Leone noted that he has been in the country for a couple of years but he hardly sees local newspapers or radio journalists discussing about business operating in the country.

He noted that journalists should take the issue of business reporting seriously as it touches every aspect of our lives.

Mr. Douglas introduced himself as a Canadian journalist and said he has been into the field of journalism profession over two decades.

He noted that out of his own private experience he has gathered in Sierra Leone journalists are not interested in business reporting.

Mr. Shalin Jethi National General Manager of the Bomba Business cooperation in his brief contribution noted that after the war in Sierra Leone most of the people doing business in the country are now engaged in survival trading, more commonly known as petty trading. According to Mr. Jethi, petty trading will not help the economy of the country. “That was the reason why the Ministry of Trade and Industry introduced the Bomba Business to empower business people have self tolerance entrepreneurship.” According to Shalin Jethi, since the introduction of the Bomba Business in the country early this year, 300 people have applied for the competition, 60 has been chosen amongst the 60, while 20 will be awarded the winning of Le75 Million in the investment of their business plans.

He finally noted that the Bomba Business was introduced for three main purpose; one to stimulate people to own enterprises, secondly to develop the demand for support service in Sierra Leone and finally to change attitude of indigenous business people in the country so that they too have the ability to win big business like foreigners in the country.
