Training for Journalists on business development reporting
The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) in collaboration with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the World Bank will on Thursday 6 May start a 2-day training programme for journalists specializing in business and development reporting. The journalists are drawn from fifteen print and broadcast media institutions across the country.
“We have partnered with the  World Bank Group to hold this training because there is need for the media to increase its coverage of business and development issues in the country,†says Umaru Fofana, President of SLAJ, adding, “it is expected that the trainees will afterwards be empowered to operate on sustainable basis as a new Network of Economic and Development Reporters (NEDER)â€.
The SLAJ President further stresses that “while the media in Sierra Leone has been very vibrant in addressing political and human rights issues, it has not given the adequate attention needed to issues of business, development, transparency and the economy. This may be due in part to the lack of capacity of journalists and the wherewithal to do their jobâ€.
It is envisaged that NEDER will provide the opportunity for media practitioners reporting on development, business and governance issues in Sierra Leone to network and share learning experience.
This inaugural phase of the NEDER project is seed-financed by the World Bank Africa Region External Affairs (AFREX) unit, encouraging future support from other partners and units within and outside the World Bank Group.
The trainings will be facilitated by local and international facilitators.
