WORLD FOOD DAY 2016 – POSTER AND VIDEO CONTEST

WORLD FOOD DAY 2016 – POSTER AND VIDEO CONTEST

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) celebrates World Food Day each year on 16 October to commemorate the founding of Organization in 1945. Events are organized in over 150 countries across the world, making it one of the most celebrated days of the UN calendar. These events promote worldwide awareness and action for those who suffer from hunger and for the need to ensure food security and nutritious diets for all. The theme for World Food Day 2016 is “Climate is changing. Food and agriculture must too.”

CLIMATE IS CHANGING. FOOD AND AGRICULTURE MUST TOO.

Climate change is affecting the health of our planet and changing our world. It is causing more natural disasters and environmental problems, which make it harder for us to grow food. Growing food is part of the problem too, as we have been taking shortcuts and harming our planet, with the aim of producing what we need. In order to feed a growing population set to reach 9.6 billion by the year 2050, we will have to learn to grow what we need in a sustainable way – a way that doesn’t continue to destroy our planet.

HOW CAN I TAKE PART IN THE WORLD FOOD DAY POSTER CONTEST?

FAO’s international World Food Day poster contest is open to children from 5 to 19 years of age. Children from all over the world are invited to use their imagination and artistic talent to create a poster illustrating the World Food Day theme: “Climate is changing. Food and agriculture must too.” This contest gives children an opportunity to express their ideas about hunger and share them with others around the world.

Posters can be created digitally, drawn, painted or sketched using pens, pencils, crayons or charcoal, or using oil, acrylic or watercolor paint. Posters should be scanned or photographed and attached as a JPEG to entry forms, available at www.fao.org/WFD2016-Contest/poster. Three winning posters will be selected for each of the categories: age 5 to 8, age 9 to 12, and age 13 to 19.

ABOUT FAO

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) leads international efforts to end hunger. FAO works with developing countries to improve their agriculture, forestry and fisheries practices and to make sure people have regular access to enough high-quality food to lead active, healthy lives. Since its founding in 1945, FAO has focused particular attention on developing rural areas, which are home to nearly 80 percent of the world’s poor and hungry people. Our three main goals are: the eradication of hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition; the elimination of poverty and the driving forward of economic and social progress for all; and, the sustainable management and utilization of natural resources, including land, water, air, climate and genetic resources for the benefit of present and future generations. FAO is present in over 100 countries around the world, and is headquartered in Rome, Italy.
