WORLD FOOD DAY 2016 – POSTER AND VIDEO CONTEST
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) celebrates World Food Day each year on 16 October to commemorate the founding of Organization in 1945. Events are organized in over 150 countries across the world, making it one of the most celebrated days of the UN calendar. These events promote worldwide awareness and action for those who suffer from hunger and for the need to ensure food security and nutritious diets for all. The theme for World Food Day 2016 is “Climate is changing. Food and agriculture must too.”
CLIMATE IS CHANGING. FOOD AND AGRICULTURE MUST TOO.
Climate change is affecting the health of our planet and changing our world. It is causing more natural disasters and environmental problems, which make it harder for us to grow food. Growing food is part of the problem too, as we have been taking shortcuts and harming our planet, with the aim of producing what we need. In order to feed a growing population set to reach 9.6 billion by the year 2050, we will have to learn to grow what we need in a sustainable way – a way that doesn’t continue to destroy our planet.
HOW CAN I TAKE PART IN THE WORLD FOOD DAY POSTER CONTEST?
FAO’s international World Food Day poster contest is open to children from 5 to 19 years of age. Children from all over the world are invited to use their imagination and artistic talent to create a poster illustrating the World Food Day theme: “Climate is changing. Food and agriculture must too.” This contest gives children an opportunity to express their ideas about hunger and share them with others around the world.
Posters can be created digitally, drawn, painted or sketched using pens, pencils, crayons or charcoal, or using oil, acrylic or watercolor paint. Posters should be scanned or photographed and attached as a JPEG to entry forms, available at www.fao.org/WFD2016-Contest/poster. Three winning posters will be selected for each of the categories: age 5 to 8, age 9 to 12, and age 13 to 19.
HOW CAN I TAKE PART IN THE WORLD FOOD DAY VIDEO CONTEST? #WFD2016VideoContest
Young people from age 13-19 can produce a video, up to 1-minute, and upload it to their personal YouTube account, adding the hashtag #WFD2016VideoContest to the title. Students or their guardians, will also need to submit the YouTube link through the video contest page at www.fao.org/WFD2016-Contest/video in order to participate.
Two winners will be selected, one by a jury and the other based on the number of views or likes on YouTube.
WHAT ARE THE PRIZES?
Winners will be announced on the World Food Day website and FAO social media on 14 October 2016, and promoted by FAO offices all over the world. They will also feature in an exhibition at FAO headquarters in Rome during World Food Week (10-14 October 2016) and receive a surprise gift bag and Certificate of Recognition signed by a United Nations official!
HOW DOES THE JUDGING WORK?
Posters and videos will be judged according to their relevance to the World Food Day theme, aesthetic and technical excellence. The three age groups for the poster contest will be evaluated separately.
The panel of judges will include professionals working in the arts, education and humanitarian assistance.
WHAT ARE THE RULES?

Submissions must be made online on the World Food Day Contest website. The deadline for entries is 30 September 2016.
