For grabbing cemetery land religious leaders accuse MP
Religious leaders from the Mosques and Churches in Constituency 096 in east end Freetown are reported to have braced up to challenge their Member of Parliament for occupying the proposed one-acre cemetery ground at the expense of thousands of residents.
The residents of Mount Zion Community in Calaba Town where the said proposed cemetery ground is located have expressed their disappointment at Hon. Alhassan Kamara for grabbing the land.
They described the MP as a non-indigene of Constituency 096 that was imposed on them just from the blues because of President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma’s blessing and the popular ‘4 For 4’ slogan of the ruling All People’s Congress (APC) Party, which they said was a mistake and vowed never to repeated it again until the cows come home.
They therefore called on the President and the APC to always award the party symbol to politicians that would stand firm for the general good of the people and not to politicians who would only come around the people during election period.
According to residents of Mount Zion, the existing cemetery at Kola Tree is now full to the brim and that the proposed cemetery at Mount Zion that was identified and approved by many key stakeholders as the only suitable area with soft soil that could allow the easy digging of graves for burial.
Many believers have committed the matter to God for His intervention saying that Hon. Alhassan Kamara did not only disturb thousands of residents but has even offended the dead by occupying the one-acre land cemetery ground.
In an interview with the MP, he denied knowing about meetings being held by religious people to ensure he is removed from the community land.
Hon. Alhassan Kamara argued that the said proposed cemetery ground was not good for its intended purpose because the land was rocky and grave diggers would find it extremely difficult to dig six feet deep into the soil for burial.
The MP conceded erecting a structure on the said land but argued that he would never fight for a land that is put aside for community use.
Residents of Mount Zion accused Hon. Kamara of being a pretender for abandoning their community since his election in November 2012, noting that he never gave up on the disputed land in the interest of the people.
They therefore vowed never to support him even if he is awarded the APC symbol in the forthcoming parliamentary elections.
When asked about his relationship with his constituents at Mount Zion who have frowned on him for the said community land, Hon. Kamara said he has no problem with them.
He recalled that when the Zionists were in court with one Kamara family over a land dispute and the court ruled in favour of the latter, he said he demonstrated his willingness to always support community initiatives for development.
