Statement on recent charcoal fraud allegations in Standard Times Newspaper
April 22, 2016 – Freetown, Sierra Leone – Further to the Standard Times Newspaper publication of 20th April, 2016 (Vol.69, No. 9), on page 16, which reads … “unlike the charcoal scandal in Makeni that was swept under the carpet …” management would like to make the following statement:
- Following an investigation conducted by Plan International’s Counter Fraud Unit and the conclusion of a disciplinary inquiry into the payment for charcoal which was not supplied, the senior staff involved in the Makeni incident was dismissed on 16th December 2015.
- We would like to reiterate that Plan International does not in any way condone fraud and would not in any way whatsoever cover any employee found to be involved in any fraudulent activity.
- Like many other previous allegations made by the Standard Times Newspaper, the assertion that this issue was swept under the carpet is false.
