Girls Empowerment Summit Sierra Leone a Success!
The Girls Empowerment Summit Sierra Leone is a three-day program organized for girls between the ages of 12-17. The program which was held last year at the St Joseph’s Secondary School has been described as successful.
Janet Ganu, one of the volunteers, said she had the opportunity to attend the summit twice, one as a ‘Gessler’ and the other as a volunteer.
She has been empowered to advocate and volunteer for girls’ rights.
“Being a part of this organization, I have come to learn so much about empowerment, sisterhood and leadership which are the main messages of GESSL to their girls and these messages are passed through different themes every year,” Ganu said.
This year’s theme was ‘Shape, Act, Change’ and the girls went through various workshops such as conflict, abuse, budgeting and fundraising, culture, telling your story, sisterhood, mirror mirror, cleansing and hygiene, and sister circles.
Ganu described the summit as very important, with mentors and workshop facilitators who helped them to achieve their dreams as well as empower them to become leaders and change agents in their different communities.
“GESSL has also taught me that my voice matters and in unity we can achieve anything. The quote that inspired me the most at this year’s summit is ‘no one’s story is the same as others and that is your super power and with your story, you can change the world’ she noted.
She said the most beautiful thing about the summit is even when they are out, there is a strong sisterhood existing between them at GESSL and they are so grateful to those who supported the program, companies such as Afrigas and Graphic World.
“We are particularly thankful for our mentors who are like big sisters to us now, and our amazing volunteers who made this event a success,” she ended.
Janet Ganu is a GESSLl Volunteer and student at University of Makeni.
