Citizens want Freetown City Council to account
As the year is coming to an end, random interviews conducted by this Reporter in the central business district of Freetown on Monday, 14 December, 2015, disclosed that a large majority of the inhabitants of Freetown want the Freetown City Council to set annual financial targets and give yearly accounts like any business organisation.
Mr. James Morrie of Sackville Street Ataya Base pointed out that citizens will be more committed to pay their taxes if the Freetown City Council becomes more accountable to its tax payers.
He observed that the Council has a lot of areas to generate revenue from more than some Ministries, Departments and Agencies but yet has no visible evidence in how these monies are spent.
Mr. Alpha Koroma of Percival Street said the Council will only take its residents seriously when an annual revenue target is set for them and they give annual reports on how they spend the money they collect from the people.
As for Miss Isata Sillah of Back Street it is ironical for the Council to leave all major infrastructural development with the central Government with little or nothing to write home about expect the increase in the number of Market Due Collectors and Metropolitan Police Officers harassing traders and hawkers all day long.
She insisted that the Council must publish their annual income and expenditure accounts so that the people will know how much they collected and they spent it.
