Single women parenthood

Most women in Sierra Leone are single parents. They take the responsibility of running the home and taking care of their children. As it is not an easy task of running the home, there must be some challenges they face.

Follow me to know more about this single parenthood and its challenges.

Madam Isatu Koroma, a trader at the Wilberforce Market told Voice of Women that she has three children and her husband left her for another woman because she couldn’t give birth to a male child.

She said for ten years now she had been the bread winner of the home. She maintains that she now copes well with being a single parent.

She revealed that one of her daughters is in university while the other two are in secondary school. She however admitted that it is not easy for her as women at this particular stage of her life.

She further said that life as a single parent makes you forgo yourself for the happiness of your children as seeing them happy gives you joy.

As a trader, she said business is not always favourable and when sometimes business is bad she is sad because of her heavy responsibilities with no sufficient money to solve her problems except to borrow from her friends and later pay back.

She revealed that living the life of a single parent is critical mostly in making decisions because if you go out to find money and leave the children at home without you guiding them they may cause troubles for themselves.

She explained that one of her daughters got pregnant as a result of that because she is not always at home and when she is at home she is tired and doesn’t have time to monitor them.

She said when this incident took place she then learned how to balance her time and spend time with her children to prevent them from going into harm’s way.

She said you can’t know what it ‘s take to be a single parent until you wear the shoes .

This clearly shows that single parenthood for women is crucial and has a lot of obstacles especially in Sierra Leone where poverty is a household name in most homes in the country.
