YWCA celebrates 100 years
The Young Women’s Christian Association of Sierra Leone (YWCA-SL) has celebrated their one hundred years of existence.
The celebration ceremony which drew the attention of Christians and Christian women organizations from across the country, was held on October 23 at the YWCA Hall, Brookfields in Freetown on the theme, “Women, God’s weapon for bold and transformative leadership.”
Welcoming celebrants to the occasion, Mrs. Bull congratulated YWCA on its birthday, noting that since its establishment in October 1915 the YWCA has been the first successful women’s organization in Sierra Leone.
In her comments, the YWCA National President, Mrs. Florence During, expressed delight and called on all to continue supporting the vision and mission of the association.
She paid tribute to their volunteers because of the extra energy they have been using to respond to issues of women and children in the country.
She maintained that the YWCA is celebrating because it is not only the first well established women’s organization in the country but it has also committed itself to promoting gender equality and national development.
She explained that because education is the tool for development, they have been engaging in providing quality education by establishing schools and learning institutions all over the country.
She intimated that they have also been working hard in providing training for Court Monitors to help women in conflict with the law and that they are 0also involved in the ongoing constitutional review process to give the views of women in the new constitution.
She also disclosed that they have also supported women with seeds and grants to engage in agricultural activities and also constructed water wells in different parts of the country including Bo, Kenema.
Launching the Pre Thanks Giving for the centenary celebration, Rev. Canon Dr. Modupeh Taylor Pearce, described the celebration as a day that many people would have loved to see.
“I feel honored to be part of this ceremony because twenty years ago when the YWCA was eighty, I was invited to be the Preacher and today I am here to perform the official launching of the one hundred years,” he narrated. He said he felt elated to salute the YWCA for what he called “the remarkable work which they have done within these one hundred years.”
He dilated that YWCA has branches across the country and has built so many schools and learning institutions that have been taking the lead to ensure women and girls have dignity.
He admonished members of the organization to be fervent in prayers if they want their organizing business to continue progressing, because, he said, prayer changes things.
