Marie Samura: Died due to manual strangulation

The Prosecution Witness five (PW5), Issa Samura, who identified himself as the junior brother of the deceased, Marie Samura, delivered his testimony yesterday before Magistrate Siray Wurie of Court no.1.

According to the witness, he received a phone call on June 12th 2015 from the accused, Gibrilla Fofona when he was at his place of work at Pa Demba road and he immediately left to the house at 20 Kumba Lane Gbendembu Goderich where he met the accused standing in the veranda and asked him what was going on in the house.

“Then the accused replied that my sister had fallen in the toilet and that I should take her to the family house as he was fed up with her,” the witness further testified, adding that he entered the house and walked to the toilet where he met her elder sister lying naked on the bare floor.

At this point, he went on, he asked the accused why he did not take his sister to the hospital for treatment but the accused replied that if the lady (the deceased) died, he would marry another wife. He continued that the accused then ordered him to quit the house. He said he then called his elder brother, Inspector Karim Samura who met him at the scene of crime.

Mr. Samura further testified that they called on neighbors who helped them to take the deceased to the 34 Military Hospital where she was not admitted but given a first aid treatment because, according to him, the Doctor who should have taken care of the deceased was not present, so, they took the deceased back to her husband’s house.

On Sunday 14th June 2015, Mr. Samura said he told his wife Jariatu Samura to join him to the accused person’s residence to take the deceased to a medical facility for treatment but that when he and his wife reached the house, he discovered that her sister was dead. He said he then called Inspector Samura who took the corpse to the Connaught Hospital Mortuary.

On the 15th June 2015, he said he was invited to the Adonkiyya Police Station where he made statement and on the 18th of the same month this year, the CID and Connaught staff invited him to witness the Postmortem process at the mortuary in the presence of a Police Officer, Connaught staff, a Photographer and the Pathologist.

The pathological report indicates that Marie Samura died due to manual strangulation. The accused is still not on bail and is remanded at the Pademba Road maximum correctional centre.
