China’s Support to Sierra Leone for Combating Ebola

China has provided 5 batches of emergency assistance to Sierra Leone respectively in May, August, September, October 2014 and January 2015, some of which have been transported by 12 chartered airplanes, and which include medical and logistic support materials, capital fund, food supply, laboratories and medical personnel.

Medical Personnel

Dispatched 426 medical personnel by 5 rotations from September 2014 to June 2015, including medical team, testing team and public health training team.

The medical team at the holding and treatment center has taken over 850 patients since September 2014;
The testing team at the mobile lab and the fixed lab has tested more than 8000 samples;
The public health training team has trained more than 6000 local trainers, medical personnel and community leaders from local communities, over 300 teachers and 8000 students in the country.

Medical Materials and Facilities

Medical and logistic support materials valued at 57.19 million RMB (equally 9.24 million US dollars);
A mobile lab and a fixed lab of P3 level;
Transformed Jui Hospital from a general hospital into an infectious disease hospital as a holding and treatment center which had operated for six month. Now the holding and treatment center is being reconstructed to a general hospital.

Capital Funds

1.5 million US dollars cash;
2 million US dollars of food supply to Sierra Leone through WFP;
11 million US dollars to the UN Ebola Response Multi-Partner Trust Fund to support the UN Mission for Ebola Emergency Response; 2 million US dollars to WHO; 2 million US dollars to African Union;

The Chinese Embassy in Sierra Leone has provided food items, medical materials, motorbikes, etc. to the Sierra Leonean government and local communities. China-Africa Development Fund, All-China Federation of Trade Unions and Chinese companies in Sierra Leone also provided support to the country.
