Germany donates fire engines worth €60,000 to Sierra Leone

Germany, Berlin, Tuesday July 28, 2015 – Three communities in the German state of Baden-Wurttemberg have donated fire engines with equipments to the Sierra Leone National Fire Force.  The three fire engines, worth €60,000 will soon depart from the shores of Germany to Sierra Leone.

Though all the three communities belong to the state of Baden-Wrttemberg, the donations were made specifically by the Denkendorf community, the Hertmann Company of Heidenheim and the Elisabeth Agricultural Farmers Association, who also bought one fire engine from the Schallstadt community.

Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany, Jongopie Siaka Stevens received the fire engines on behalf of the government and people of Sierra Leone.  He thanked the donors for such humanitarian gesture, noting that: “the donation could not have come at a better time that this, since prominent among the myriads of difficulties confronting the post Ebola Sierra Leone is the unavailability of adequate fore engines to boost the work of our comrades in the fire brigades across the country.”

Ambassador Stevens described the handing over ceremony as symbolic and a manifestation of the long standing fruitful bilateral relations between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of Sierra Leone.

Present among the high calibre of people during the handing over ceremony were the Hon. Minister of State in Baden-Wurttemberg, Minister for Traffic and Infrastructure and the Mayor of Baden-Wurttemberg, Peter Jahn.

Ambassador Stevens singled out Sierra Leone’s Honorary Counsel in Stuttgart, Mr. Willi Drechsler, as extremely instrumental in coordinating the fire engine project and working closely with the CEO Managing Director of Stuttgart Airport, Mr. Walter Schoefer.

While acknowledging the efforts made by Mr. Schoefer in providing a pleasant stay for Sierra Leone’s Chief Fire Officer, Mr. Nazir Bongay and for the payment of the freight cost of the three fire engines to Sierra Leone, Ambassador Stevens expressed profound thanks and appreciation to the Government and people of the Federal Republic of Germany for their continued support in several development projects in Sierra Leone.
