Alie Bangura Chasing the Wind

Alie Bangura and his petition team are closing the stable door after the horse has bolted, meaning they are taking precautions too late. It would have been wiser for them to do everything possible to prevent the alleged fraud that took place during the August 2013 Sierra Leone People;s Party (SLPP) National Executive election.

In Sierra Leone politics, seldom do election petitioners win their cases and the SLPP, particularly, is on record for losing election petition cases often due to procedure problems. The election petition cases of two successive SLPP flag bearers, Solomon Ekuma Berewa, 2007, and Julius Maada Bio, 2012, were both dismissed from the court on the grounds of improper procedures.

Now, the Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC) has withdrawn from Alie Bangura’s election petition case due to similar procedure problem. This is a clear signal that Alie Bangura and his petition team are heading towards losing their cases against alleged electoral fraud and illegal expulsion of Alie Bangura from the SLPP.

With such unpleasant development in Alie Bangura’s case, he and petition team must be chasing the wind or engaging in fruitless endeavor. African politics is a fair and foul game, so, when playing it you have to be on your guard and not allow your opponent to deflate you by either means. Whenever you are defeated by foul means, it is often very difficult for you to seek redress.

Alie Bangura and team should learn a big lesson from the dismissed petition cases of Berewa and Bio and consider solving their own cases at party level.
