Africell donates 450 bags of rice
for Gov’t Ebola response …Kailahun, Kenema, Bombali, Tonkolili, Port Loko benefit
Ebola infected families, survivors and quarantined houses in Kailahun, Kenema, Bombali, Tonkolili, PortLokoDistricts would have to benefit share a total of 450 bags of rice (22, 500kg) from Africell Limited. The quantum will be distributed today Monday 1st September 2014 to the beneficiaries by the various District Health Management Teams with the supervision of the Local Councils.
It was about two weeks ago the company announced that it will be setting aside Le1.00 (one Leone) for every minute spoken on it network, and that funds collected will be used to deliver rice to all areas significantly affected by the Ebola crisis in collaboration with the required government authorities.
The company has poised to make the delivery of at least 800 bags of rice (400 kg) per month through the Ministry of Health to the required beneficiaries.
“Africell wants to assure Government and the people of Sierra Leone that is will always be there for and with the people of Sierra Leone as it has always been,” says Joe AbassBangura, Corporate Affairs Officer of the Company.
Bangura promised that the company will continue to host the 117 Toll Free Line in other to help the public access information on how to deal with the Ebola virus.
“By providing communication, awareness and information, funding and feeding, Africell is going all the way to contribute and close the resource gaps in ensuring that we defeat the Ebola virus as a nation. We join the people of Sierra Leone to pray that the crisis ends very soon,” says Bangura.
The Minister of Information and Communication Alhaji Alpha BakarrKanusaid there is 80% chances of survival on early reporting of suspected cases to the health personnel. He is convinced the Africell has been on the forefront to fight Ebola virus in Sierra Leone. “We want people to listen to correct information coming from health personnel so as to prevent new infection,” says Minister Kanu. He commended the company for providing food and urged that water be also added to the rice that will be supplied to the beneficiaries.
The 450 bags of rice will be shared thus: 100 to Kenema District, 100 to Kailahun, 100 to Port Loko and the remaining 150 will go to Tonkolili and Bombali Districts.
Mrs. SholadePyne-Bailey of the Ministry of Health and Sanitation said the intervention of the company to provide food is timely because most of the EPI Centres are in dare need of food supplies. Feeding gap, she said is the other of the day, and that the provision of rice will rescue the burden of government and the World Food Programme.
The head of National Telecommunication Commission, Dr. Tom ObalehKargbo re-echoed the fact that this is the time for all Sierra Leoneans to come together to fight against Ebola. This, he said will enable the country to cope with the virus and continue its development strides.
