15 years on and Brima Attouga Kamara still lingers in our mind

As the Sierra Leone Football Association and the family of the late Brima Attouga Kamara (Sierra Leone’s Best and most popular Goalkeeper) sit together yesterday to remember the late football hero, several veterans made meaning remembrance of THE GUY as he is commonly known among his associate and friends.

The Sierra Leone Football Association has gone to the family of the late national goalkeeper to give the family a helping hand as they commemorate the day in a low key fashion. However, the presence of the FA Vice President, Brima Mazolla Kamara, the General Secretary, Chris Kamara, Sorie Ibrahim Sesay and several veterans including Abubakarr Tostao Kamara, Lamin Junior Tumbu Conteh, Tamba Moses Amidu Karim Koroma, Charlie Wright and John Keister lighten the hearts of the Attouga family to the point that instead of shedding tears of sorry, tears of joy was shed by especially the wife and daughter of the late hero.

While Tostao, Amidu Karim and Junior Tumbu spoke about his past life and described him as a very good person though sometimes conservative, the FA Vice President described him as a man who knows he would be great since he was an under 12 in the Real Republicans under 12 team. Mazolla, who was the first Sierra Leonean to go professional recalled those days when he was playing for Real Republicans and the late Attouga was in their under 12 team which won that category championship that year. He said Attouga who was the best player of the tournament was asked by the former Inspector General of Police, Late James Bambay Kamara to identify the present he wanted.

“He told Bambay Kamara that he only wanted a bicycle which he could use to come for training on a daily basis. Bambay Kamara was surprised that the lad could ask for something that he could use to come for training and it was then that most of us became optimistic that the guy was heading for a heroic display for his nation,” VP Mazolla said.

Responding, the wife and daughter of the late man lauded the idea of the FA noting that they have been running after past FAs to recognize Brima Attouga but to no avail and therefore expressed optimism that success is written in the DNA of the new FAs Executive headed by Madam Isha Johansen.

“What you have done for this family today will go down in the family history as the first FA in 15 years to join us in commemorating my late husband’s death. I wish you well in your undertaking and hope this will continue in good faith,” Mrs Kamara said.

Meanwhile, the FA will be organizing a football match between the two clubs he played for; Mighty Blackpool and East end Lions; and veterans that played with him versus those that did not. The matches will be played on Saturday at the Football Academy and entrance fee is three thousand Leones. The teams will gather at the FA Secretariat at 3pm and proceed to the late man’s grave, which have been cleared and cleaned by the SLFA, to say prayers. The match is expected to commence at 4pm.

Proceeds will be given to the family of the late Brima Attouga Kamara; therefore pass this message on and be part of the program. You can call on 076389323 or visit the SLFA Secretariat to donate to this wonderful cause.

  • I am highly impressed by the Football family of S/lEONE for the recognition granted the Late Brima ATTOUGA kAMARA. This is a gesture that should be granted to all our past heroic sports men and women. I will also say that it is never too late for any good thing to be done. Bravo to the organizers.
