Visit of the Mayor of Kenema Town at the Embassy in Washington DC
His Excellency Ambassador Bockari K. Stevens today received in audience at his office the Mayor of Kenema City Council and his entourage, His Worship Brima Kargbo. After brief welcoming remarks, the Mayor, who is visiting the United States for the first time on the invitation of the Sierra Leone Kenema District Development Mission (SLKDDM) in the United States, thanked the Ambassador for accepting him on a very short notice. He said he is on a visit to this country to give support to the development efforts of the organization which is on a fund raising drive to accomplish some projects in Kenema District, principally, the rebuilding of a wing in the Kenema District Government Hospital. The Mayor also took the opportunity to brief the Ambassador, who is also a native of the District about developments in Kenema Town and the District in general. He then appealed to him to give all necessary support to the organization at all times. The visit which will be for a month–long duration will be climaxed by the annual fundraising dance on Saturday March 27, 2010 in Washington DC.
The Ambassador, in turn, took the opportunity to acquaint the Mayor with some of the efforts of the embassy since his assumption of duty such as the need to have an umbrella organization to facilitate contact with all Sierra Leoneans in the United States, the task at hand to erect a commemorative hospital in Sierra Leone by the Sierra Leonean Diaspora in the United States  for the forthcoming 50th Anniversary of Independence  celebrations for which a body, THE SIERRA LEONE ARC OF HOPE, is already in existence, and the recent formation of a Committee of Sierra Leoneans to assist in the celebration, in grand style, of both the 49th and 50th anniversary of independence.
The Ambassador lauded the development agenda of the SLKDDM and opined that should every Sierra Leone Organization in North America replicate such efforts, then we can develop our country in a short time. He said the embassy’s doors are always open to every Sierra Leonean for assistance and advice and will do everything possible during his tenure to promote both the interest of Sierra Leone and the interests of every group, including the Sierra Leone Kenema District Development Mission. He then thanked the Mayor for the visit and before his departure invited him to a photo opportunity with his Deputy, Alahji Ibrahim S. Conteh.
Present at the meeting were:- Alahji Ibrahim S. Conteh, Deputy Chief of Mission; Messrs. Mustapha Mansaray, President, SLKDDM; Francis Samba, Chairman of the Board, SLKDDM; Bockari Conteh, Secretary General, SLKDDM; and Victor Tarmoh, Social Secretary, SLKDDM. There are plans for the mayor to meet with important local personalities in Washington and Maryland.
