Mayor Commission’s Kenema City Library

The Mayor of the Kenema City Council Mayor Joseph Samba Kaifala has Thursday 22 May 2014 commissioned and officially opened the newly rehabilitated city library at Mission road in Kenema City.

In his opening remarks the chairman of the occasion who doubles as a supervisor of School Kenema district Mr. Gbebeh said that the occasion is unique one as an educational institution is again going to be commissioned in Kenema, adding that over the years they have been getting problems with school going pupils as most of the school going pupils cannot express themselves using  the English language and even their hand writing and that their ministry is grateful to the regional librarian for her effort in upgrading the city library.

The regional librarian in her welcoming address thanks the guest for coming to grace her occasion.

Agnes B. Momoh added that the day marks another historical day for the people and school going pupils in Kenema as they having a befitting library and therefore call school going pupils to make the Kenema City library as their friend which will help them in achieving their educational dream, noting that she is happy for the day and admonish the school going pupils to make good use of the opportunity proved by the government through the Kenema City Council.

In his statement the chairman of education committee of the Kenema City Council, Councilor Amidu Bah said that the Kenema city library has be undergoing a series of renovation and rehabilitation but this one is of a different and that he is happy for the library as it have many core text that will engage the school going pupils and therefore call on the pupils to always visit the library.

He admonished the regional librarian to improve on the standard of the of the city library to a modern one adding that the Kenema City Council has provided internet for the library but will expand it for it to meet the standards of a modern library.

The Vice Principal of the Eastern Polytechnic Gbassay Y. Amadu in his statement said at the Eastern Polytechnic they are only concerned with the issues of knowledge which is light.  He said the city library is located at the center of the city which has been hosting people who are not even school going pupils, adding the library has been a reference place for many people educated in Kenema City.

Making his statement the chairman Conference of Principals Eastern region S.S. Vandi said that one can get a complete education through the use of a library for no money, noting that a library is a spaceship that will take one to the farthest reaches of the universe, a time machine that will take one to the far past and the far future.

He added that a library is a teacher that knows more than any human being and that library is a place to go to get in out of the rain and it is a place if one want to sit and think but in particularly it is a place where books live and where one can get in touch with other people and others thoughts through book.

In his key note address the Mayor of the Kenema City Council Joseph Samba Kaifala said that with the availability of well-equipped libraries both the City and the regional library in Kenema city, with no doubt that the city will now be partially equipped to add to the academic regalia of the nation, adding that the occasion has brought men and women from all works of life for few hours to remind the people of Kenema about the important of education and call on the pupils and student to use the facilities for their academic advantage.

Mayor added that the ingredient for quality education can be found in the a material dimension and non-material dimension, noting that the importance of library does not in any way require emphasis and that the cost  their library price is cheap compared to that of an ignorant nation. He said that as education is being the key to unlock the golden door of freedom, so also libraries are the keys to the attainment of education.

The Mayor reiterated that the library is meant not only for school going pupils but for graduates, teachers, lecturers and even public servants and therefore call on the pupils to make the Kenema City library as their friend as is the library is the back bone of education.
