Makeni celebrates successful marathon
Makeni City, Northern Sierra Leone, over the weekend celebrated the third successful marathon organized by Street Child Sierra Leone. The event brought together 200 international competitors alongside about 500 Sierra Leoneans. With boisterous support from across Bombali, the runners had a wonderful moment in Sierra Leone’s fastest growing city where Street Child was founded by a United Kingdom Businessman, Tom Dannatt in 2008. Tom Dannatt, who is very passionate about street children’s development in Sierra Leone, was part of those who completed a 5km marathon run. The event combines the challenge of a full marathon, half-marathon, 10 km or 5 km race and that it was opened to runners of all abilities.
Sierra Leonean runners competed for a share of Le 9, 000, 000 (nine million Leones) on various categories won.
This year’s full marathon run was won by Osman Charlie; followed by Idrissa Kargbo and Banjor E. Musa in second and third positions respectively. Adama Kamara clinched the first position trophy in the female category. Victoria Bestman and Sallay Hassan Koroma took second and third positions respectively.
In the 5km women category, Isha Kargbo, Marie Conteh and Hawa Mansaray received prizes and trophies for first second and third respectively; whilst in the men’s category Bilal Tarawalie, Augustine Ansu Momoh and Joseph Mioguwa came first, second and third respectively. The 10km run saw Posseh Bangura, Fatmata Kargbo and Rosaline Koroma clinching the first, second and third positions respectively in the women’s category; whilst Mohamed Bai Koroma, Abu Kamanda and Mohamed Mansaray took first, second and third positions.
Female winners for the half marathon run are: Fatmata Suluku – first, Alisia –second, and Adama Kamara-third. Augustine Sheku Momoh came first in the men’s category, whilst Sahr Samuel Brima and Samuel Sesay took second and third positions respectively.
Prizes were distributed to winners in the village competition.
The Mayor of Makeni City, Mrs. Sunkari Kabba-Kamara said Street Child is complementing the effort of government in protecting and making the lives of street children comfortable.
The Minister of Information and Communication who represented President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma said the organization is making the international community realize that Sierra Leone is peaceful and steadily progressing. Hon. Alpha Kanu. He pledge government’s continuous support to ensure that a friendly environment is provided for Street Child to achieve its goal.
