ACC consolidates partnership with the media in Kono
In pursuit of its core principles of coalition building and partnership in the fight against corruption, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Sub-Regional Office Kono has on Tuesday 13th May, 2014 held customized meeting with management and staff of Radio New Song FM 91.1 on the dangers of the corruption at their Conference Hall, Main Kainkordu Road in Koidu City.
Explaining the significance of the meeting, ACC’s Public Education Assistant, Sahr Nabieu maintained it was to sanitize the relationship between the Commission and media practitioners, educate them on the operations of the Commission and enlist their much needed support in the fight against the pandemic.
Mr. Nabieu reminded journalists of the three track approach employed in the campaign and the mandate of the Commission. The Public Education Assistant dilated on the dangers of corruption and the benefits of a non-corrupt community. He outlined the protection measures for informers and the ways and benefits of reporting corruption to the Commission. Mr. Nabieu entreated the pressmen to constantly propagate to the public cogent anti-graft messages.
ACC’s Sub-Regional Manager Kono- Bob Tejan Kandeh drew the attention of journalists to the offences and punishments in part four of the AC Act 2008. He unearthed several achievements of the Commission such as the conversion of so many people from corruption practices and the suppression of corruption through public education.
The Manager noted that the Commission has gingered up the completion of so many unfinished projects and has received lots of reports that are being investigated. Rev Bob Kandeh stressed that the work of the Commission is no witch-hunt though it will leave no corruption case uninvestigated.
He admonished the media practitioners to report stories that will breed development in the community.
Earlier in his statement, Station Manager Radio New Song FM 91.1 Kono, Probyn John Alpha welcomed the ACC in their midst and described the meeting as a dream come true; since this is the first time the ACC has educated them on its operations which manifested the Commission’s total determination to suppress corruption in Sierra Leone.
The Manager commended the ACC for the tireless work in the District. Speaking on their challenges, Mr. Alpha enumerated that the station operates with volunteer staff, lack of heavy power supply generator, lack of mobility, lack of stationery and training opportunities.
He appealed to the Commission to conduct professional trainings for reporters on investigative journalism and corruption reporting techniques as they will always render their unflinching support to the Commission.
