As President Ernest Bai Koroma continues to encourage Sierra Leoneans in the diaspora to come and join in the transformation of the country, a Sierra Leonean who has spent 18 years in America has responded to the call of the President with the opening of the $20,000  Mayellie’s Beauty Salon & Boutique at Pademba Road,  Freetown.  (Photo: Mayellie Barrie, Mayellie Salon & Boutique, Propretress)

The ceremony, which took place on Friday 2nd May 2014, brought together various dignitaries including the wife of the Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources, members of the Fadika family and experts in the field of cosmetology, all aimed at supporting the new venture.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, owner and founder of Mayellie’s Beauty Salon and Boutique, Mayellie Barrier revealed that she became a fashion designer as a young girl before she had the opportunity to travel to the United States of America where she resided for over 18 years.

She added that while in the USA, she attended numerous courses in nursing and cosmetology but asserted that due to her love for fashion and design, she decided to return home to give back to her country.

Madam Barrie also revealed that the salon should have been opened in April last year but that due to the death of her mother; it was postponed and gave thanks to God Almighty for fulfilling her dream.

According to Madam Mayellie Barrie, different types of hair designs and manicure would be provided at the salon to give customers, both male and female, a good look and revealed that the salon also has wedding dresses, shoes, bags, watches and other items made in England, Italy and America at affordable prices.

She further informed that even though she would not be staying in the country, the business would be managed by her younger sister and asserted that it was not easy to setup the business but only triumphed through courage, perseverance and passion for the job and that she solely funded the business out of her own resources and that of her sister.

She also disclosed plans to seek other sources of funding including that of Government as her dream is to establish a School of Cosmetology to train her less-fortunate compatriots for them to become self-reliant and urged other Sierra Leoneans in the diaspora to complement the development efforts of Government thus contributing to the advancement of the country.

Vidal Claye, one of the sponsors of Mayellie’s Beauty Salon and Boutique said he joined the venture due to the call of his wife, Isata Elizabeth Claye and the sub-standard beauty products in the market which are not good for the image of the country revealing that the owners of the business have a wealth of experience acquired abroad that they want to replicate in Sierra Leone in their services and products.

According to Mr. Vidal Claye, the company has already employed 2 hair dressers, 1 barber and a cleaner with plans to employ more people to offer quality services and products to his compatriots and was optimistic that the venture would motivate other Sierra Leoneans to emulate the sterling example.

The Manageress of Mayellie’s Beauty Salon and Boutique, Isata Elizabeth Claye said that she was overwhelmed that the salon has finally opened and promised to offer quality products and services at affordable prices to her valuable customers and Sierra Leonean more Western style and beauty.
