High Commission Nigeria Celebrates 53rd Independence
The Sierra Leone High Commission in Nigeria on Friday April 25 th., Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th. Celebrated its 53rd Independence Anniversary. Nigeria and Sierra Leone has a long and close historical ties. Nigeria being the big brother of Africa sacrificed Men, sweat, blood, tears and resources in bringing Peace to our beloved Country, Sierra Leone during the eleven (11 yrs) years Rebel War. We are eternally grateful and appreciative for such humanitarian gestures.
Rather unfortunately, our 53rd. Independence Anniversary Celebration coincided with the Terrorist Bombing at Nyanya, few Kilometres in Abuja, the Capital City that left at least Seventy One (71) Civilians dead and over One Hundred seriously injured. This brought an untold sufferings not only to Nigerians in particular but to the Civilized World in general.
It is against this background that our 53 rd. Independence Anniversary was Celebrated in a low keyed manner. Friday April 25 th. The High Commissioner, Henry Olufume Macauley, his Deputy Maj.Gen. Alfred Nelson-Williams and Staffs of the High Commission and concerned Sierra Leoneans including Mrs. Zainab Abdulahi paid a visit to those who were Warded by the Bomb Blast at the National Hospital, Abuja and later Donated Medical Supplies to the Victims. The Authorities at the National Hospital paid a glowing Tribute to the President, His Excellency Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, government and people of Sierra Leone for such a thoughtful gesture.
The Embassy Staffs including Ambassador Henry Macauley latter participated in the Muslim Jumah Prayers in which the Chief Imam and elders of the National Mosque otherwise known as the Central Mosque offered special prayers for the government and people of Sierra Leone marking its 53rd. Independence Anniversary Celebration.
On Saturday April 26th. Sierra Leoneans gathered at the Embassy in the evening to grace the Occasion by interacting with one another. The new Deputy Ambassador Maj.Gen. Alfred Nelson-Williams was introduced by Ambassador Henry Macauley to the Sierra Leoneans. Also, the Sierra Leone Association Of Journalists President Kelvin Lewis was in attendance to the Independence Celebration. sierra Leoneans join Ambassador Henry Macauley to cut the Independent Cake.
On Sunday April 27th. at 08:30 hours, Staffs of the High Commission and Sierra Leoneans led by Ambassador Henry Macauley went to Triumphant Church for Service and special Prayers were also offered for the government and people of Sierra Leone.
In the evening of Sunday April 27 th. a Reception was organized at the Reiz Continental Hotel attended by guests from all works of life including Diplomats from High Commissions from Countries accredited to Nigeria. The High Commissioner read his speech starting from the decade old bilateral ties between Sierra Leone and Nigeria. An Award was made to Ambassador Henry Macauley. Sierra Leomeans again joined enmass with Ambassador Macauley in cutting yet another Independence Cake.
