Gov’t Promotes Secondary School Agriculture

The government of Sierra Leone, through the Western Area Directorate of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has opted to promote secondary school agricultural practice as part of the development of agriculture in the country’s food security drive.

Speaking to Sierra Express Media, Head of Western Area Directorate of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security (MAFFS) Madam Haja Kamara said the programme is to promote agricultural knowledge and practice among school going pupils band to also ensure that they get acquainted with the use and practice of tools as part of their overall academic development.

Madam Kamara said the Ministry is quite aware that Secondary School Agriculture is very vital in laying the foundation for agricultural practice and development in the country; and that the Agriculture Ministry wants to work closely with secondary schools in not only in the Western Region of the country to ensure that school children absorb the relevance of agricultural practices in the development of school gardens in the country.

She disclosed that the school programme will be offering assorted seeds, organic manure, bi-product of palm kernel (also to be used as manure) and simple agricultural tools which it is hoped will help the pupils learn the names of the various tools, how to use them and also to help them in their examination practicals.

The Director and team will be visiting your school  visited various schools to distribute and confer with school agricultural teachers on the way forward in the promotion of the practice and knowledge of agriculture among school pupils which the director noted is key to the incorporation of agriculture in the holistic development of the country.
