AIPS Condemns Glasgow Commonwealth Games Organizers Over Payment For Internet Service

Some 270 delegates present at the ongoing International Sports Press Association (AIPS) Congress in Baku Azerbaijan on Tuesday 29th April 2014, signed a petition condemning the decision of the organizers of the July 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow Scotland for accredited sports journalists to pay for internet services even as they cover the games.  (Photo: The high table discussing the petition)

The AIPS World President Gianni Merlo, addressing delegates on the issue, said the organizers have asked journalists to pay the sum of US$ 95 excluding photographers who must pay US$ 135 as fees to use the internet.

He said the decision was very unfortunate simply because, an appreciable number of the sports journalists going to Glasgow have to buy their air tickets, pay for accommodation etc. from their own pockets taking into consideration the difficulties faced by the traditional media regarding revenue generation and sustenance.

To demonstrate his outer disgust over the decision, the AIPS President said: “some of these journalists live on a single meal a day therefore telling them to pay a fee for internet service to propagate the games is totally unacceptable!”

Gianni Merlo also added the decision of the Commonwealth organizers was not in the spirit of good sportsmanship.

Meanwhile, the AIPS has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on ‘Fruitful Cooperation’ between the International University Sports Federation ‘Special Olympics,’ (FISU), and the International Federation of Sambo (FIAS).

The ‘Special Olympics’ focuses mainly on World University Championships for ‘Intellectual Disability.’
