Ola During Children’s Hospital launches Quality Malaria Care Job Aid

Freetown, April 24, 014 (SLENA) – Ola During Children’s Hospital has launched the Quality Malaria Care Job Aid and awarded certificates to 316 Doctors, Nurses, Pharmacists and Lab Technicians after successfully completing a training on the use of the Quality Malaria Care Job Aid in Freetown at the Anesthetic Lecture Hall, Princess Christian Maternity Hospital in Freetown.

Launching the document at the Princess Christian Maternity Hospital Anesthetic Lecture Hall, the Director of Hospitals and Laboratory Services, Dr. Donald Bash-Taqi, commended the staff of Ola During Children’s Hospital for the tremendous work in putting the Quality Malaria Care job Aid together.

He described the document as an invaluable useful collection to improve and enhance quality treatment for malaria, and thanked the Malaria Control Programme for the initiative taken to reduce malaria in the country.

Dr. Taqi maintained that malaria is responsible for the high infant mortality and morbidity in Sierra Leone, adding that the availability of the document, would help reduce the high malaria disease burden in the country especially with children under five years.

In his remarks, the Programme Manager, National Malaria Control Programme, Dr. Samuel Juana Smith described malaria as the number one killer disease for under five children and pregnant women, which accounts for 40.3 percent of out patient morbidity for all age group.

He commended the Quality Advance Team for the good job with a view to ensuring that children do not easily die of malaria any more.

Dr. Smith said WHO recommends confirmation of malaria through parasite-based diagnosis in all patients prior to instituting treatment, adding that the document would help save the unacceptable deaths of children suffering from malaria.

The Medical Superintendent Ola During Children’s Hospital and Chairman of the ceremony, Dr. David Baion said the Quality Malaria Care Job Aid was prepared by the Clinical staff of the Ola During Children’s Hospital to tackle malaria among children under five and expressed gratitude and appreciation to all those who in diverse ways contributed to the success of the programme.

Presentation of the Quality Malaria Care Job Aid and distribution of certificates of certificates formed part of the ceremony.
