International recording star Buba makes a patriotic debut with “Freetown Boi”
FREETOWN, SIERRA LEONE MARCH 25, 2014: The melody behind the lyrics serve as an allegory for what the artist has in store; his name is Buba, and the interpolation in his latest single “Ittaquallah” (Artaqula, Arabic for “Fear God”) is the classic 1996 Fugees descant, “Ready or Not”.
Hailing from Freetown, Sierra Leone but raised in the United States for many years, Buba is set to make a lasting impression in the world of African Hip-Hop music; an impression that he says some may not be prepared for.
“I’m versatile when it comes to my music so I’m not sure if there is any one category to put me in. I’m not just an average artist from Sierra Leone and that’s how the movement #LimbaSwagg was born.”
“Freetown Boi” is a blend of Western and West African sounds that cater to the ears and hearts of lovers of Hip-Hop and traditional African music alike. The backdrop for “Freetown Boi” is a mixture of both original and sampled compositions.
The subject matter of Buba’s songs—which he writes all his own—stand as a jarring reality of the beautiful West African nation in which he hails from. “I came from the East of Sierra Leone, the slums called Locust, went to America, and came back to live with my sister who is Lebanese which in Sierra Leone is associated with as ‘high class’. All of those experiences make me who I am, the good, the bad and the ugly; and those experiences make my music what it is”.
Many may wonder why someone would return to the war ravished nation after living in the seemingly comparative opulence of the United States, but Buba is determined to make it clear that he loves his home country and the title of his debut mixtape “Freetown Boi” speaks to that sentiment.
