IMC Regional Desk Officer hosts Journalists in Makeni

To strengthen quality, objective and efficient Journalism, the Independent Media Commission’s (IMC) Northern Region Desk-Officer- Karifala Samura (in photo) insists on having Journalists trained and deployed to carry out specific reporting on salient and corrupt issues affecting the Community and the state as a whole.

The IMC Desk-Officer told local radio station Managers and Editors in Makeni that, there is every need to develop the media to higher height.  He expressed regrets that there are very many newsworthy items to be made known to the public. Court sittings, the hospitals, Councils, the Schools etc are all very important places where very serious and dedicated Journalists ought to be constantly deployed for quality, responsible, timely and objective information dissemination.

The IMC northern boss reminded attendants over the alarming rate of mishaps in society. Further, he drew the attention of Journalists in the ongoing saga at the Regional hospital in Makeni involving the death of a pregnant woman barely two weeks ago. “That would have served as a deterrent to have earlier perverted the cause of allege negligence, corruption and bribery, if there were already deployed Journalists on ground”.

The concerned Desk-Officer stretched to suggest the collaboration of all media houses in Bombali district and their reportage. He proposed what he referred to as “interconnected broadcasts”. An initiative that will allow simultaneous broadcasts of well investigated news items in all local radio stations in Makeni  for wider dissemination. “That he said; will make our Journalists strongly stand for what they are and with much potential to promoting the media image their recognition in society”. He appealed to attendants to put hands on deck to see how best we can a better change, Mr. Samura appealed.

“The more professional and closely we come together, the greater we stand the chance to energize young pupils and students in tertiary learning to become interested and have respect for the profession-such precedents can only be set by our outputs and collaborations in society”, emphasized.

Mohamed Sankoh is the Station Manager for Radio-Mankneh 95.1 in Makeni. He is one of the innovators to making the Desk-Officer’s dream come to fruition. In that angle, station Manager Sankoh suggested the identification of serious Journalists to take up the deployment tasks. He furthered that the three local radio stations in Makeni will have to provide  at least five reporters to be well trained to facing the tasks. Additionally, news editors will have to be focused in editing, producing and presenting the all-agreed weekly review programs that allow Journalists to analyze critical issues bordering the Community and the state.

SLAJ Regional Chairman- Mathieu Kanu was part of the all important meeting,. He commended the IMC Desk-Officer for taking such a bold step in the right direction. Kanu strongly vowed to closely work with the Desk Officer and colleague Journalists in making sure Journalism reaches its apex.  “I want to see a very large number of SLAJ members to allow us independently shoulder most of our challenges, especially financial and professionalism before I quit the position in the near future”.

By virtue of their commitment, a very big meeting has been scheduled for next Monday at the IMC regional office at  Nicol Street in Makeni. Therefore, every Journalist in Bombali is expected to take full advantage of the meeting, the IMC Desk-Officer averred.
