Welcoming participants, drawn from Bombali, Tonkolili, Koinadugu, Port Loko, Kambia and Kono districts, the ACC’s Regional Manager, North, Mr. Patrick Sandi referred to the validation exercise as another epoch making event geared towards the development of Sierra Leone. He underscored that the National Anti-Corruption Strategy is a road map for the development of the country which encompasses the people’s views and opinions on how to fight graft. “We have witnessed two editions of this strategy. This is the third we are developing which tells us that we need to do more towards the fight” he said.

Manager Sandi emphasized that the validation exercise was a product of stakeholders consultations in November last year by the Technical Expert Team (TET) together with the Anti-Corruption Commission to develop a new five-year national strategy which provides the requisite frame work for the fight against corruption for the period 2014-2018. After these nationwide consultations, he went on, a draft strategy was formulated and brought back to the Northern Region to see whether they agree or disagree and also make additional inputs.

The Regional Manager encouraged all participants to be very frank in their contributions and speak out their minds as to how corruption could be effectively tackled in the country. “The strategy is going to be your strategy. You are therefore required to ensure its success and take part in the monitoring process”.

In his presentation on the draft strategy, NACS Implementation Officer, Ibrahim Kargbo explained the methodology and processes used to arrive at the draft. He gave a detailed explanation on the content of the draft strategy and at the end of his presentation divided the participants into various groups to vet the action matrix and suggest additional action points. At the end of the exercise, representatives from the various groups made presentations on where they agree and disagree and made suggestions. The NACS Implementation Officer assured the participants that their inputs and suggestions would be transmitted to the Technical Expert Team for inclusion into the final strategy document.

Similar validation exercise was held in the Eastern and Southern Regions.
