GUMA boss speaks on water management

The General Manager of Guma Valley Water Company (GVWC) Mr. Mada Pengeh has urged all Freetownians to take a proper care of water provided by the institution.

He said people should stop the habit of cutting and disconnecting pipe borne water, he further appealed for clients to understand that water is not a free commodity.  “It stands to be paid for the fact that the government is spending huge sums of money on water projects and no country in the world is supplying water to its citizens freely,” said Pengeh.

He spoke about the great misconception on what is happening in the water sector and the efforts of government to put to an end to the prevailing circumstances surrounding the water system.

Mr. Pengeh pointed out that water facility wasn’t designed for the increasing number of people that are living in Freetown.  “Now Freetown inhabitants are over 2 million, as a result of this many areas would not have free flow of water supply, a situation we have as a challenge for us in GUMA and the government, we are going to put laws in place that will make people take the issue of water seriously,” he said.

He realized that water shortage in several homes contributed immensely to the increase of teenage pregnancy among young girls who normally go at night to fetch water.  That is why, he said, the Ministry of Water resource is setting up strategies to ensure every household is provided with at least a pipe borne water to provide clean drinking water.

It could be recalled that Freetown the capital city of Sierra Leone has over the years and is currently experiencing inadequate water supply to nearly all parts of the municipality.  Pengeh was talking to Journalists in Freetown during the usual weekly Government Press briefing.
