Njala University Bo Campus in turmoil

Normal activities of Njala University Bo campus on diverse dates between Monday 10th march and Tuesday 11th march 2014 came to a stand still following a bloody demonstration staged by student of the learning situation.

It could be recalled that, on Monday 10th march 2014, fourteen students including three female were arrested by police of the Bo west police station for offences ranging from riotous conduct to disorderly behavior.

Speaking to this medium at the Njala university Towama campus, two miles away from the Bo city, some of the aggrieved students disclosed that, the ugly situation is not unconnected with the fact that, on Monday 10th march this year, the university administration partially deprived and prevented some good number of students from sitting to their exams.

They lamented that, the university administration had earlier informed them that government has resolved to pay eighty percent of the university fees and that, they are only going to pay twenty percent of the fee, and all of the sudden they were asked to pay sixty percent instead of twenty percent.

They furthered that, the administration had allowed students of other faculties to take their exams without paying the required and proposed sixty percent fees unlike the sociology and social science students describing it as very discouraging and embarrassing.

They recalled that, in the previous academic years, they were paying three million Leones per student but increased it to six million Leones for no good reason.

According to the dejected students, with the intervention of the mayor of Bo city Mr. Harold Tucker and others, on Tuesday 11th March this year, the police were able to release ten out of the fourteen arrested students on condition but that, on the departure of the mayor, the DVC allegedly ordered the re-arrest and detention of the said students a situation which provoked and irritate the burning of the block-A hostel building.

However, over fifty of them are currently in police net helping with the investigations.

The students had categorically stated that, there will be no peace at the university campus until their colleagues are released.

“No Release, No Exams. The DVC must Go” they shouted with their plat cards.

According to eye witness account, police have ordered all students to vacate their hostels and the entire campus until further notice and that, thousands of them have already displaced.

Meanwhile, the aggrieved students have vowed not to allow any normal activity to return to the university campus until their demands are met.

The university administration is yet to comment on the circumstances surrounding the unpleasant development.
