SLACHO holds first annual General Assembly in Bo

The Sierra Leone Association of Community Health Officers (SLACHO) recently held their first Annual General Assembly on Saturday, February 22 in Bo on the theme: “Unity and service to humanity.”

The meeting attracted over 100 community health officers drawn from across the country.

In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the Bo District Council, Mr. Joseph Munda Bindi, said the gathering was unique as it brought on board all health workers to to plan for health service delivery in the country.

According to him the people of this country are now very conscious about the health situation in the country.

He however stressed that there was still more to do in order to get the desired objectives.

Chairman Bindi noted that it was now time for health practitioners to come together to plan for the good health of the people of the country.

He stated that health practitioners are very important in the health service delivery, adding that the theme was very appropriate.

Mr. Bindi admonished the community health officers to put all hands on deck and support one another for the achievement of their goals.

He thanked them for the services that they have been rendering to the communities for the past ten years. He encouraged them to be united in their service for national development.

Earlier in his statement, the Deputy Community Health Officer, Mr. Mohamed A.S. Kamara said that SLACHO is a profession which the Ministry of Health and Sanitation has endorsed since 1986 and that their main task is to work at community level to take care of the health of those communities.

He also explained that since the formation of SLACHO this was their first Annual General Assembly that has been held.

Mr. Kamara pointed out that the reason for holding the meeting was for them to share ideas and to admonish themselves as to how they can serve humanity earnestly for the development of Sierra Leone.

He said he was happy to report that they have achieved a lot since the formation of the association.

He called on his colleagues to embrace one another and work in unity for the achievement of their objectives.

Delivering his keynote statement, the Director General of Primary Health Care in the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, Dr. Momodu Sesay, said that the Community Health Officers should have solidarity, love and concern for their profession.

He also stated that they should have passion and compassion for the people they serve, as they are expected to provide effective and efficient health service delivery.

He called on the officers to be united and stay committed in the execution of their duties as the Health Ministry puts a lot of premium on them.

Meaningful statements were made by Mr. Bashiru Koroma, a Lecturer at the School of Community Health Sciences, Njala University, and Mr. Joseph Senesie, a representative from UNICEF among others.
