ACC solicits support from arabic college in Magburaka

The Northern Regional Office of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has appealed to staff and students of Arabic College in Magburaka to join the fight against corruption in a bid to ensure that the socio-economic needs of Sierra Leoneans are met.

This appeal was made by the Regional Manager, North, Mr. Patrick Sandi at a jam-packed meeting at the college campus in Magburaka on Wednesday 26th February 2014.  He told staff and students of the institution that the fight against corruption is a fight for all and should not just be left in the hands of the Commission.   Manager Sandi entreated them to see the fight against corruption as a collective responsibility which requires coalition building and partnership.  He lamented that the fight against corruption is difficult because corruption is always fighting back, but noted that those benefiting from it are fewer than those suffering from it. He therefore called for public support and confidence in the Commission.

“The fight against corruption is not just the business of ACC but the people’s fight. We should look at corruption as a common enemy that will destroy the country” he maintained.

The Regional Manager explained the numerous strides made by ACC in the fight against graft through the public education, prevention and confrontational approaches.  He made mention of the development of service charters for various public institutions in a bid to enhance transparency in service delivery processes. Manager Sandi entreated staff and students of the College to join the No Bribe Campaign. “If we work together in a coordinated form, this campaign will succeed” he emphasized.

In the same vein, ACC’s Senior Public Education Officer, Mr. Al-Hassan Sesay called on staff and students to be willing and committed in the fight against corruption. He dilated on the role of the college in ensuring success in the fight against corruption in the country. The Senior Public Education Officer told staff and students present to preach against corruption to their congregation, communities and wherever they find themselves. He added that the fight against corruption is a shared responsibility of all Sierra Leoneans, which presupposes that it should not be left in the hands of ACC alone. He encouraged them to resist, reject and report corrupt practices whenever they come across them.

He however warned them against making false report which he said, constitutes one of the offences in the Anti-Corruption Act.

Speaking on behalf of the Principal, staff and students of the College, one of the lecturers, Muctarr Talib Kabba thanked ACC for enlightening them on its activities and their role in the fight against corruption in the country.  He expressed appreciation to ACC for bringing the Commission to their doorstep, which he noted would go a long way to minimizing the malaise in the institution as they would inculcate the values of transparency and integrity. The Principal heaped praises on the Commission for its positive strides in ensuring the success of the Free Health Care programme.  He assured the Commission that they would preach against corruption and stand firm against any acts of corruption in the institution.

Questions, suggestions and comments from students formed the end point of the engagement.
