Information minister promotes education in Port Loko
Port Loko, Feb. 24 (SLENA) – Barely two weeks after his disbursement of millions of Leones to youths as a start up purse towards the effective commencement of ‘Agriculture for Development’ in his district headquarter town, the Minister of Information and Communication, Alhaji Alpha Kanu who is currently engaged in state duties elsewhere in the country, has instructed his wife, Madam Dr. Abbie Kanu to address some of the immediate concerns of the people of Port Loko. This is specifically the issue of the less privileged school going pupils who have been sent home by their respective heads of schools because of non-payment of school fees.
The bulk of these pupils, according to reports monitored by SLENA, are orphans or those whose parents are not strong enough to pay on time.
It is against this background that Madam Dr. Kanu is presently awarding a total of 75 scholarships to poor and needy pupils in the township of Port Loko.
Addressing the recipients, Madam Kanu said the situation is far more crucial for the Girl Child who could be exposed to a lot and lots of risks and untimely pregnancies if the situation is not treated with the deserved seriousness, stressing that it was as a result of the gravity of the situation that her husband instructed her to go ahead with the award of the scholarships in his absence.
Approximately, ten schools including Islamic, Catholic and Schlenker Secondary Schools benefited from the package.
According to the wife, the Information minister is of the firm belief that the ongoing levels of rough times most Sierra Leoneans are faced with could easily be minimised or completely eradicated if the youths are properly skilled for self reliance and equal opportunities are availed to school going pupils for quality education.
As recently outlined in his address to the youths of Port Loko, his desire is to enhance a situation where every youth will cherish the need to earn a living instead of depending on gifts or donations from friends and relatives under the slogan ‘Bra you borbor dae’.
This was the cardinal reason why he encouraged the youths and other able bodied people to partition themselves into farming groups some of which he has started funding already.
At the Sierra Leone Church Primary School which is incidentally the Alma meter of her husband, Madam Kanu informed the school authorities about the determination of her husband to render a helping hand to the school. She went on to express similar sentiments at the Sendugu Roman Catholic Primary where she started her primary school education.
Madam Dr. Kanu said she has been following developments in the school with keen interest and thanked the school authorities for their dedicated service and encouraged both boys and girls, especially the awardees to make proper use of the opportunity by concentrating on their books, study hard and pass all their examinations with flying colours.
The Head Teachers of both schools, Mrs. Aminata Augustine Kamara and Fatmata L. Kamara expressed thanks and appreciation to Madam Dr. Kanu and her husband for the timely intervention and assured of the judicious use of the package.
