RSLAF is the pride of our democracy’ -President Koroma re-echoes
President Ernest Bai Koroma has said that the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) is the pride of this nation’s democracy because they have been vigorously maintaining peace, strengthening our border security and immensely contributing to national development.
He acknowledged their loyalty due to their exemplary performance and emphasized that our troops have been called to command a sector in Kismayo in Somalia while others were serving in Mali, and Sudan.
The President who is Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of Sierra Leone made these assertions at the Hockey Pitch at Wilberforce Barracks on Tuesday, February 18 2014 while delivering the keynote address on the third day of the Armed Forces Week.
‘’We are here today to honour Sierra Leoneans who truly deserve honour as they are gallant men and women who have decided to lay their lives for this country,‘’ the President maintained.
‘’That is why my Government is always observing this day to reflect our memories to the great service the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces are rendering to the this country,‘’ he noted.
He explained that appreciation is a divine virtue especially for the selfless service they are giving to this nation.
The Commander in Chief maintained that our armed forces are matching with us in to a bright future, which he said was the reason Government has initiated a lot of development projects for them including the establishment an agricultural farm to help improve food security for the vast majority of the country’s population.
He pointed out that he was therefore happy to announce that Government has increased their salaries.
The President emphasized that a lot of training opportunities are now open to members of the RSLAF, adding that more space has been created for women to be able to compete with their male counterparts.
The President made it clear that his Government has put in place various counter terrorism measures to confront intimidation and terrorist attacks.
He assured Sierra Leoneans that these counter terrorism measures reflect strong regional approach.
He extended Government’s sincere appreciation for the invaluable support rendered to the RSLAF by friendly partners and commended the Soldiers for displaying discipline in their various duties.
He urged the Soldiers to continue maintaining discipline and become most accountable to democracy.
‘’Our Soldiers, in conjunction with the Sierra Leone Police provide security for us that is why the country was globally praised during our 2012 elections,‘’ he noted.
He noted that the country is rising again with the armed forces for democratic accountability, gallantry and professionalism.
