Hon. Ansumana Jaia Kaikai Speaks…
Hon. Alhaji Ansumana Jaia Kaikai of Constituency 87 in the Pujehun District is the longest serving Member of Parliament in the legislature.
On Friday 31st January 2014, he drew the attention of parliament regarding the issue of Lungi Airport and the on-going project for Mamama as an international Airport. On the floor of parliament, the honorable lamented the current decision of the APC government to undertake the Mamama project that will cost the nation hundreds of millions of United States Dollars.
In a very polite and objective manner, Hon. Ansumana Jaia Kaikai asked the present government to make public the studies that were carried out by the Tejan Kabba regime and completed on the best option in finding a route that will link the capital of Freetown and Lungi International Airport by land. The study was done by experts. The study according to Hon. Jaia Kaikai was financed by African Development Bank (ADB) to the tune of $2 Million for that study and the consultants came out with 8 professional recommendations. He therefore suggest and asked that the recommendations be made public by the present government so that the government and the people of this nation can better cost effectively decide between Lungi international airport, the Honorable opined. Whatever the people prefer either, $100 million for the construction of an airport at Mamama or extend and or improve on the infrastructure at the Lungi airport the honorable concluded.
Since then this medium has been searching for the better option between Mamama and Lungi along with the 8 professional and technical recommendations made by the consultants in 2006. Some people share the view that instead of spending hundreds of millions of dollars on Mamama, there are grey areas which the present government can address to promote the Agenda for Prosperity. For instance, Agriculture which is the nerve center for economic growth should be a priority for youth employment. In other communities and aren’t the mass exodus of youth in the urban settings in search of jobs.
Another school of thought is of the view that since corruption is endemic more especially in the police force, government should install traffic lights in the cities and minimize the daily collections of handouts from drivers and motorists. These and more options could salvage our present economic austerity if Lungi international airport is given premium for cost effectiveness
Furthermore, this press had fruitful discussions for travelers who go out and come in through Lungi International Airport who informed this press that the airport has undergone tremendous development over the years. As at now, Lungi has a 247 solar light system which never existed before. They are of the strong opinion that instead of government spending hundreds of millions of dollars Lung airport needs more high profile reconstruction to link the airport with a capital city (Freetown) by land which will cost less than one hundred billion Leones. It will be prudent for the government to consider the two options (Lungi airport and Mamama) in order to take a decision that will not affect our economic situation.
