Le150Million fine paid &… minister escapes going to jail

A last ditch attempt was made late on Thursday evening to prevent Sheku Tejan Koroma from going to prison for five years.

We have been reliably informed that intervention from above helped secure his freedom with the payment of the Le150 million which the former Health Minister and his family were unable to raise.

Justice Mary Sey had imposed a ‘first of its kind’ record breaking fine in a corruption matter on the minister; Le150 million on each of the three counts, which to many was too harsh despite welcomed by the anti-corruption commission describing it as setting precedent..

The Minister went to court that morning expecting to be found guilty but least expected the quantum of fine imposed.

His lawyer described the sentence as harsh but Moiwo Ngavao did not express any intention of appealing.

Sierra Express newspaper reported last Friday that as at the time of their going to press the previous night, the Minister had not paid the fine and was whisked to prison to start serving his sentence.

But all this changed dramatically less than 24 hours after when the fine was paid to the treasury of the law court and a production order prepared for his release.
