Abacha Street traders to move to Victory Park in February
Information reaching this paper indicates that petty traders selling their wares on the main streets of Freetown are to be relocated to the Sewa Grounds in February this year.
In an interview with a petty trader, Madam Rugiatu Bangura, she explained that they have started their registration process to be granted space in the place ground where the Freetown City Council (FCC) is now busy finishing the construction of market stalls.
Another trader, Mrs. Frances Conteh admonished the FCC to expedite action on relocating them to the Sewa Grounds so that they will stop being harassed Police personnel.
She stressed that most of them are the bread winners for their families and they therefore urgently need a market place to continue their daily business.
She called on Mayor Franklyn Bode Gibson to focus on the welfare of traders, most of whom are youths fending for themselves.
A Lebanese businessman at Sani Abacha Street, Mr. Hassan Basma, expressed satisfaction with the decision of FCC to relocate the petty traders to Sewa Grounds as this will allow the front space of their shops to be vacant and give customers better access to the inside of shops.
He opined that the new market should be furnished with basic social amenities in order to minimize the generation of filth in the market.
A member of the Presidential Task Force who spoke to this reporter assured the traders of Government’s commitment to protect their interest. He maintained that with time the traders will be located to a more conducive place.
