African Minerals Limited (AML) Sierra Leone and one of its sub-contracting companies, the China Civil Engineering and Construction Company (CCECC) have donated learning materials worth US$5,000 to four primary schools in the Lokomasma, Buya-Romende and Kalansogoya chiefdoms.  (Photo: GM Port and Rail making a statement)

Kevin Mclean, General Manager Port and Rail AML, said together with their sub-contracting companies they were always passionate about the development of education in those areas affected by their operations.

He called on other sub-contractors to emulate the examples of CCECC and encouraged beneficiary teachers to ensure that the children benefitted immensely from their services.

He also urged the children to seize the opportunity and make themselves useful citizens who would contribute to the development of their communities.

Making a statement on behalf of CCECC, the project manager said “we are leaders in the field of engineering construction not only because of our superb professionalism but also because of our selfless dedication to community work”.

He observed that education continued to play a vital role in training civilized citizens, promoting local economy, enhancing national strength and maintaining world peace.

He referred to the donation as a small part of his company’s long cherished dream of helping the needy. He stated that they were happy to partner with African Minerals to make the donation a reality and assured the gathering of their continued search for opportunities to invest in the affected areas.

Community Superintendent Port and Rail, Catherine Greenwood, who chaired the programme, asked beneficiary communities to exercise patience and believe in AML and its sub-contracting companies that they would deliver and make their lives better.

She encouraged them to protect the investment and move away from activities and actions that would sabotage the operations of the company.

In his keynote address before vice president of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) Stanley Bangura thanked CCECC and African Minerals for donating items towards education and encouraged them to do more.

The SLAJ vice president also said that it would do the company more good if they put premium on investing in education as compared to infrastructure and other development within their affected communities.

“Investing in education will make the communities able to better interpret rail safety messages”, he said.
