Road Transport Authority reveals statistics on crash fatalities
Freetown, Nov. 26 (SLENA) – The 2010 global survey by the World Health Organization found that Africa has the most unsafe roads in the world, with a regional death rate of 24.1 road death per 100,000 population, compared to a global rate of 18 deaths per 100,000 population.
In that survey, Sierra Leone had a rate of 22.6 deaths per 100,000 population, significantly higher than rates for Liberia (19), Guinea (19.2) and Cote d’Voire (20.9).
During the launch of the National Road Safety Strategy 2013-2015, His Excellency, President Ernest Bai Koroma called on all MDAs as well Municipal and District Councils to be actively involved in the implementation and monitoring of activities proposed by the strategy.
He said his government will continue to construct good roads that will be safely maintained for used by all road users.
“We’ll continue to ensure that the Sierra Leone Road Transport Authority meets its obligations to government lead agency in enhancing road safety in the country,” the President maintained.
In its annual report, the RTA has disclosed the state of the road traffic crash fatalities and injuries by region respectively as follows:
Northern Region – 95 deaths; serious injuuuries171; minor injuries 215
Southern Region – 28 deaths; serious injuries 137; minor injuries 342
Eastern Region – 52 deaths; serious injuries 28; minor injuries 29
Western Region – 72; serious injuries 304; minor injuries 410.
Total was given as east 247, West 640, South 137 and north 996.
