Squash Chairman to organize open tournament this week

The Chairman of the Racket and Squash Association Mr. Umaru Kakay, has disclosed that he will be organizing the Squash Open Tournament from Wednesday, 20th to Friday, 23rd November this year at the Armed Forces Squash Club at Wilberforce in Freetown.

According to him, the purpose of the tournament is to further enhance adequate skills in the players to maintain their professionalism in plying the Squash game at international competitions expected at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. He added that members of the school Squash players in the country will also take part in this coming tournament.

He also disclosed that he has organized several tournaments in 2012 and 2013 and that he led the country’s Squash team that participated in the Nigerian Open in 2011in Nigeria.

Mr. Kakay further disclosed that he gained the attention and sponsorship for two Opens from one of Sierra Leone’s leading telecommunications companies, Africell. He assured all Squash players that he will continue to promote the game until the discipline becomes popular across the country.

“I thank President Ernest Bai Koroma and his Vice President Chief Samuel Sam Sumana for promoting Squash in the country,” he stressed.

He also revealed that two Squash players and one official will represent Sierra Leone in the coming Commonwealth Games, one of the players being the number one ranked player, Mr. Issa Kamara who is based in Turkey while his team mate will be a local based player.

He concluded that all the necessary modalities for the Commonwealth Games have been completed with the National Olympic Committee (NOC).
