New York City, New York – Victor Mooney of Queens briefed H.E. Anatolio Ndong Mba, Ambassador for Equatorial Guinea to the United Nations on his upcoming five-thousand mile solo transatlantic row on Thursday. Afterwards, Mr. Mooney went into detail on his preferred rowing route and discussed the importance of having a formative support team.

The Head of State, H.E. Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, President of Equatorial Guinea, is the principal sponsor for the Goree Challenge. The rower recently met his patron during the United Nations General Assembly in September and emphasized the importance of voluntary HIV testing.

Mr. Mooney looks to ship The Spirit of Malabo, a 24’ foot Brazilian built ocean rowboat to the Canary Islands soon. Plans are also underway for the rower to visit Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea for an official send-off. Afterwards, Mr. Mooney will meet with Equatorial Guinea officials in Madrid during a stopover en-route to Las Palmas, Canary Islands.

The Republic of Equatorial Guinea (República de Guinea Ecuatorial) is the only Spanish-speaking country in Africa, and one of the smallest nations on the continent. In the late-1990s, American companies helped discover the country’s oil and natural gas resources, which only within the last five years began contributing to the global energy supply. H.E., President Obiang Nguema Mbasogo has championed the fight against AIDS through preventive education, condom distribution and financing of antiretroviral medicine for afflicted populations. The Head of State also called for a shared responsibility in fighting the disease.
