ACC Integrity Club Holds Debate on Corruption

The Services Secondary School Integrity Club, Freetown, in collaboration with the Literary Debating Society has on Monday 1st March 2010, conducted a debate competition on the topic: “Extra-classes Conducted by Teachers is an Act of Corruption”. As the Anti Corruption Commission considers coalition building central to the success of its work, it provided logistical support and two staff members served as judges.

In his address, chairman of the ceremony, Mr. Moseray Jusu said the topic was carefully chosen to get the pupils’ understanding of corruption and for the Commission to get their perception on the topic. He stated that the Services Secondary School Integrity Club is trying to set bright example in the country by genuinely fighting against corruption. Mr. Jusu emphasized that they rely heavily on the Commission to bring sanity to Sierra Leone.

Preceding the debate was a skit performed by the school’s drama group titled: “Corruption! E nor good”. Ibrahim Kamara and Kofi Garber supported the motion while Brima Kamara and Bartholomew Kamara argued against the motion.

Prior to announcement of the results, Public Education Officer, Mr. Mohamed Ali Kamara gave a brief background of the establishment of the ACC and its mandate. He encouraged the pupils to join the fight against corruption for a better Sierra Leone.

While announcing the results, the chief judge, Mr. Al-Hassan Sesay congratulated the participants for their effort which he noted was commendable. He however expressed concern over the non participation of girls in the debate and encouraged them to challenge the boys in future. “As the adage goes: what men can do, women can do it better” he emphasized. Mr. Sesay further doffs his hat to the Teacher Coordinators for organizing the debate which he noted was a brilliant idea and the drama group for the spectacular performance.

One of the Teacher Coordinators, Mr. Henry Mahoi thanked the Commission for providing support towards the debate. He expressed his determination to make the club active and a force to recon with in the fight against corruption. “If fighting corruption requires genuine sacrifice, I am ready to make that sacrifice” he stressed.

Those who debated for the motion emerged as winners with 31 points while those against scored 30 points. The best debater was to Bartholomew Kamara. Educational and promotional materials were handed to the president of the club while one of the members of the club, Marion Campbell gave the vote of thanks.

In a bid to mobilize the pupils into a formidable anti- corruption force, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) established Integrity Clubs in twenty six secondary schools across the country and one polytechnic in Kenema, Eastern Region.
