Gbendembu Ngoiwahun people cry for help

The people of Gbendembu Ngoiwahun Chiefdom in the Bombali District, north of the country, are calling on concerned authorities to save them from an unrest caused by the ongoing battle for Paramount Chieftaincy between the Sesay and Kargbo families.

An indigene who spoke to this paper disclosed that they have already written a letter to the Minister of Local Government Mrs. Diana Konomanyi Kabbah, dated 18th October, 2013 where they explained the trouble that is brewing in the chiefdom and appealing for Government intervention.

He explained that the Sesay family has accused the Kargbo family of rigging the 2009 Paramount Chieftaincy elections and that one Mr. Sorie of that community was alleged to have participated in the dishonest process.

He also stated that some youths of the chiefdom were incited to undertake acts of violence against the Chief Custodian, Mr. Sorie, and threatened to harm him if he should let the voting box into the wrong hands.

He said the incident was reported to the Police who calmed the situation.

One Lilian Sesay, a student of the chiefdom, told this Reporter that the misunderstanding between the two families is threatening the standard of education in the chiefdom. She said they were appealing to the Government of Sierra Leone to intervene and resolve the impasse before it escalates further.
