As Africell Squash tourney ends in grand style VP applauds association executive
The two day Africell sponsored Squash tournament which took place at the Armed Forces Squash Club, Wilberforce on 18th and 19th October, 2013 has ended in colorful celebration, this paper can attest.
In the U-23 Category, Alfred Kappia beat Fayia Koroma by three straight sets (11-2) (11-9) and (11-4) to win the championship, while in the Open Category, Daddy Kofi upset defending champion, Fayia James, by three straight sets (11-8) (11-5) and (11-8).
In the exhibition match, Vice President Chief Samuel Sam Sumana beat David Jombo Conteh by two straight sets under the old rules (9-2)and (9-7).
The two day tournament was jam packed with fans, Africell staff, members of the Squash Association, ex-Squash players and well wishers all neatly dressed in their Africell T-shirts.
In the handing over of prizes ceremony, the Chairman of Squash and Racket Association in Sierra Leone, Mr. Umaru Kakay, thanked Africell for their wonderful contribution in promoting Squash in the country.
He noted that he was highly impressed by the visit of the Vice President to grace the occasion. He also paid special tribute to all those who participated in diverse ways including his executive members, to make the exercise a success.
He said he was happy to report that under his leadership they have achieved a lot in Squash in the country, which he said has grown to a higher level.
He declared they were set to score higher achievement by representing the country to compete in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland.
In his statement, Vice President Sumana noted that Africell has promoted Squash in the country for a long time. He said it was therefore no surprise that they were sponsoring the present tourney.
He thanked Mr. Umaru Kakay and his executive for their success in promoting the game, adding that he believed that they will continue to do more in the promotion of the sport.
The top three winners in each category received cash prizes and the occasion was climaxed with merrymaking, wining and dining.
