Mayoress of Makeni arrives in Peoples Republic China for World Agritourism Development Forum

The first democratically elected female Mayor in Sierra Leone, and the first in the history of northern Sierra Leone will be joining dozens of other mayors from across thirty other countries the world over.
Welcoming Mayoress Kabba Kamara in China, Sierra Leone’s envoy to China, His Excellency Victor Bockarie Foh spoke of how elated he was to receive her, adding that Sunkarie Kabba Kamara is the currently the only female Mayor in Sierra Leone, and “more especially am honored to be welcoming her to Beijing, and more especially that the Mayoress comes from Makeni, a city with great potentials in Agritourism.”
Ambassador Victor Bockarie Foh encouraged Mayoress Kabba Kamara to work on establishing more trustworthy contacts that will help to link her city, Makeni, with other cities in China.
Mayoress Sunkarie Kabba Kamara in her response, expressed delight over Ambassador Foh’s reception accorded her. She also expressed thanks and appreciation to the staff of the Embassy for giving her valuable support since the invitation was extended to her by the Organizing Committee of the World Agritourism Development Forum in September this year.
The World Agritourism Development Forum, with leisure agriculture as its content, is a permanent, multilateral cooperative platform that is focused on rural tourism and devoted to the cooperation and development of related industries across the globe.
As an outcome of this all important forum, participants are expected to be able to establish Cities Alliance of World Agritourism Development Forum; recommend each country’s excellent and distinctive Agritourism resources, offer constructive suggestions to other countries in developing Agritourism and work on cooperation in exchanging tourists. It is also expected that at the end of the forum, special targeted tourist groups will be organized to visit representative cities as a way of experiencing their distinctive Agritourism.
Mayoress Sunkarie Kabba Kamara will also be delivering a speech on Makeni’s leisure agriculture and rural tourism potentials. As part of her speech, she will be informing colleague participants that “agriculture is the primary occupation of the people” in Sierra Leone as it “employs two-thirds of the labor force and accounts for 50% of GDP.” She will also touch on export potentials from the sector, especially on how agricultural exports amount to millions of dollars and “consists of coffee, cocoa, palm kernels, piassava, kola nuts, and ginger.”
On Agritourism in Sierra Leone, she will disclose how it involves “all agriculturally-based operations or activities that bring visitors to its farm …which includes buying produce direct from the farm stand, navigating corn maze, picking fruits, or feeding animals.”
Mayoress Sunkarie Kabba Kamara holds a Bachelor’s degree in Geography and Sociology from Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, and a Master Degree in Sustainable Development, from the University of Makeni Sierra Leone. All her years, she has worked for a number of Organizations, including, Action Aid, Caritas Makeni, DFID and UNICEF.
Madam Mayor has had many years of experience in working on emergency post relief and development activities, within and outside Sierra Leone, in Senior and Management positions, all of which have helped in earning her excellent organizational skills and the ability to work in politically complex environments with sound knowledge of economic and political development issues.
Madam Sunkarie Kabba Kamara is also idealistically oriented towards social activism, and deeply concerned with, and connected to people especially children. She is fully knowledgeable in operations of national and international non-governmental organizations in promoting Good Governance, Peace Building, Child Protection and sustainable Youths and Women’s Empowerment Programmes in collaboration with Civil Society and government partners.
The Press/Information Department of the Sierra Leone Embassy in China will be conducting an exclusive interview with the Mayoress on her visit and other governance issues as related to her work in the Makeni City Council.
In another but unrelated development, Sierra Leone’s Auditor General, Mrs. Lara Taylor-Pearce on October 21st arrived in China, together with Vidal O.Paul-Coker, Deputy Auditor-General, of Sierra Leone Audit Services for this year’s International Conference of Supreme Audit Institutions. (INCOSAI).
Marked every three years, this year’s conference is the 21st, and held on the theme, ‘Good Governance and Accountability in National Audit and national Governance’. Hosted this year by China, Sierra Leone, through her two representations from the Audit Service Commission, will be making a presentation on ‘Experience Sharing on Performance Measurement Framework.’
