‘We have constructed a lot of feeder roads’ PRO, MAFFS

The Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Food Security has on October 16th 2013 observed World Food Day.  Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Food Security, the Public Relations Officer in MAFFS Abu Daramy reiterated that, Food and Agricultural organization [FAO] of the United Nations marked October 16th as a special day set aside every year to observe the World Food Day. He made the deliberation when addressing news men during the Government weekly press briefing in the Ministry of Information and Communications Youyi Building Brook fields in Freetown.

The theme for this years celebration is ‘’Healthy food system’’

He maintained that, the day was observed not only to encourage the participation of rural people especially women and children but to promote the transfer of technology to the developing world among other things. He emphasized the great strides that, the Government of Sierra Leone have executed to make sure this became a reality.

Mr. Daramy pointed out that before 2007; the only function that Agriculture Ministry  performing was the supply of ancient tools like hoes, Cutlasses etc to local farmers. Presently, he said the Ministry have built one hundred and ninety three [193] Agricultural Business Centers [ABC] around the country provided with Machines, drying floor, storage facility and office space etc.

He stated that, road construction is not the role of the Ministry of Agriculture but he said, it is their own responsibility since they wanted to see farmers prosper. He reaffirmed that most feeder roads are constructed by the Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Food Security [MAFFS]. He mentioned that, they have trained extension workers to help farmers in their Agricultural processes. He observed that, it is very difficult to give loans to farmers because they had no collateral or security or guarantee.

Making an input was the Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Honorable Theo- Nicol, intimated that, in the Agenda for Prosperity which started in 2012 placed Agriculture as a major pillar. He therefore call on all Sierra Leoneans to continue to work hard in the agricultural sector.
