NPA workers may strike soon
Contrary to reports that there are widespread calls for the General Manager of the National Power Authority (NPA), Dr. Zubairu Kalokoh (in photo), to be sacked, information gathered by this press, has revealed that it is the Board of Directors that has been given an ultimatum to resign or face an industrial action by the Senior and Junior Staff Association of the NPA by the end of this month because of what they described as their mismanagement of the utility, and employing young and inexperienced people to key positions of the NPA.
Regarding areas presently going without electricity supply, it has been confirmed by this press from reliable sources that most of the recommendations put forward by the General Manager for the procurement of vital materials to repair faults and replace meters and transformers are being stifled and approvals delayed by the Board of Directors.
It is against this backdrop, the source pointed out, that the Senior Staff put forward their resolution that government should waste no time in dissolving the Board of Directors failing which they would have no option but to stage a strike action.
The source further explained that another factor that has been highlighted and which is militating negatively on the operations of the Authority is the indiscriminate way the road contractors are habitually destroying NPA facilities, thereby creating a situation for consumers to be without electricity for a considerable period of time.
The source observed that in order to replace damaged equipment, the Authority needs to go through the official procurement process which takes time and cannot be neglected or bypassed.
It was also reported that some ill-motivated people are in the habit of tampering with NPA installations thus causing problems resulting in the loss of transformers, meters, switch gears, breakers and other vital components for the smooth generation, transmission and distribution of electricity to its consumers, the source concluded.
