Enterprise Sierra Leone 2013

Enterprise Sierra Leone 2013 September got off to a great start this year with Enterprise Sierra Leone 2013 (held from the 2nd to the 6th of September at the Sierra Leone Library Board).

Over the course of the week, we had a packed room of up to 40 students, from the Institute of Public Administration and Management, Fourah Bay College and TrainingSol.  During the five days the students learnt about business idea generation, starting a business with limited capital, marketing and branding, value generation, market insight, networking, pitching and launching a business, and finally business modelling.

The week of training was kicked off by an inspiring presentation from Daniel Osei-Antwi from SplashCash and brought to a close by Leah Mansaray from Afford: both were deeply encouraging to the students.  The quality of both the opening and closing speakers was matched by workshop leaders throughout the week. These dedicated individuals include: William Conteh, Fatou Wurie, Claudette Ahiabor, Evelyn Lewis, Fatu Yumkella, Udozima Ulasi and Edmond Nonie.  We are hugely grateful to all of them.

At the culmination of Enterprise Sierra Leone 2013, we held the prize giving for the winner of AIP’s Business Plan Competition.  It was great to hear from our winner Sunah Keili and the inspiring keynote speech by Modupe Taylor-Pearce was a fantastic way to end a busy week of learning!  We’ll be circulating a formal report to all our friends later, but we wanted to be sure to thank a few very special people first.

Firstly, AIP is grateful to our generous donors, De La Rue and the Segal Family Foundation for funding all our activities and programs. We couldn’t have done this without their support, trust and vision to invest in the next breed of Rwandan Entrepreneurs.

The University of Sierra Leone has been an important partner during our events. We would like to thank staff at FBC, IPAM and COMAHS and special thanks go out to Ms Lola Aforo the PRO and director of CAPS at USL, the Vice Chancellor, Karim Noah, Desmond Coker, Samuel Weekes, Thomas Yormah, Winston Webber and Samuel Braima.

AIP are greatly indebted to the judges, David Sengeh, Nikki Germany, Zainab Koroma and Samzu Agbaje, who committed their time in assessing the Business Ideas in Phase 1 as well as Phase 2 and whose work is invaluable for the continuation fo the competition.

Many thanks to the Sierra Leonean Student Ambassadors for their invaluable on the ground support. A special thanks to Herve Kubwimana our Rwandan Country Director and Nomfundo Magudulela who both informed the programme design from Rwanda and the UK respectively.

The AIP Team!
