Imam Sheik Issa Habiba Sesay Needs Urgent Help
Terrible disappointment is an understatement to describe the manner in which Imam Sheik Issa Habiba Sesay is being treated after a gruesome road accident enroute to Mathoir village on Thursday, February 11th, 2010 to join the community of that village in welcoming President Ernest Bai Koroma. The accident claimed the life of Imam Sesay’s younger brother whilst Imam Sesay sustained severe life threatening injuries. According to reports reaching us from Sierra Leone, he is paralyzed from the neck down. His sister, Madam Hawa Sesay also sustained serious injuries.
Imam Sesay was leading a convoy of his followers to welcome the president in his native hometown of Mathoir at the request of his cousin, Honorable Mohamed D. Koroma, Deputy Minister of Health, when he got the accident. But sadly, even though a life was lost on the spot and the Imam and his sister wounded, no immediate arrangements were made to take the victims to the emergency hospital in Freetown. Instead, they were taken to Mile 91. The Deputy Minister then called Magburaka Hospital for an ambulance.
According to further reports reaching us, doctors at the Magburaka Hospital said that their hospital is not equipped to treat such severe injuries. As a result, the Imam and his sister were then taken to the Choithram Hospital only to face rejection. They had to take them to the emergency hospital in Goderich but were rejected again. Finally they were taken to Connaught Hospital were despite the trauma and pains which these patients were going through, doctors at the hospital utilized delaying tactics with the hope of extorting money from family members.Â
The Deputy Minister of Health helped Imam Sheik transfer to Choithram hospital where he was treated for couple of days at the minister’s expense. According to the latest development from Minister Koroma, doctors have declared that Sierra Leone do not have the medical personnel and resources needed to assist Imam Sesay and therefore should be taken overseas for treatment.
Family members, friends and sympathizers are relentlessly striving to fly their dear brother to Ghana or Europe where neurosurgeon specialists and equipments are available. However, this process could not be feasible without government involvement and assistance. Imam Sesay is almost dying now because of his steadfast commitment to support President Ernest Koroma’s political agenda. Sources say that the President has been informed about the fatalities of the accident but he is yet to respond in the way and manner that befits the father of a nation.
We are asking the general populace to help plead with President Ernest Koroma to show compassion, mercy and hear the cry of the dying man whose usefulness on earth is ticking by the second. A man whose support to you is undying even as he is dying. A man whose last happy moments were the thoughts of welcoming you, Mr. President.
